Best Budget Drift Sock

Honorable Mention – Drift Sock

Why You Should Trust Us

Selecting the best drift sock for your fishing boat is like choosing a replacement for your dog.  Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic.

But having a quality drift sock will allow you to fish with peace of mind that your drift sock will stand up to the nastiest wind or waves.

Before you commit to a drift sock, you need to get to know what options are out there.  This article will provide you with the information you need to know in order to make a decision that you will be satisfied with for years to come.

We used our experiences with the products and looked over hundreds of customer reviews, watched tons of video reviews, and analyzed what the professionals and experts had to say from popular sources like Lindy’s Anglers Edge.

We scrutinized the data from the product catalog pages of nearly a dozen manufacturers, and we even tried to interview some of the company representatives to talk shop and get their take.

What Makes The Best Drift Sock For Your Boat?

There are many factors that go into determining what a great drift sock will look and feel like.  Some of those factors include practical uses as style, the quantity of socks needed, length, and material.

Each we will explore individually.

Style: Cone or Drogue

Drift socks come in two many styles a cone-shaped and drogue.

The cone shape allows the water to enter through the large end and exit the narrow end, just like a traditional cone.

Whereas, the drogue is more like a parachute that has opening vents on the sides, thereby allowing water to escape.

While drogues are lightweight they are made of lightweight nylon and lack durability to resist and snags. Making drogues to rip and tear very easily… Not a good choice for drift fishing.

Cones are by far the most popular style. Cone-shaped drift socks are simplistic in design won’t rip and tear like a drogue.

Quantity of Socks Needed: One or Two?

The length of a drift sock is important because it will give you a sense of how much water it will hold.

Leading experts strongly recommend using two medium-sized drift socks instead of only one large drift sock.

Using two drift socks gives you the ultimate versatility in where you place the drift sock. Owning two drift socks allows you to quickly and easily drift sideways or the more traditional aft placement of two socks.

It gives you the option to control your speed of the drift…

Using two socks will slow most boat’s drift to a baby’s crawl.  However sometimes you make need to drift a little faster, just simply pull in one of the drift socks and your speed will increase.  It’s that easy!

Length: 30″-60″

Deciding on the length of a drift sock can also cause a large amount of confusion.

Putting your concerns to rest. Most standard size fishing boats will do just fine using a drift sock that is over 30-inches.

Material: Rip-Stop vs Nylon

When drift fishing your drift sock needs to be constructed from the most durable material on the market: Rip-Stop.

Rip-Stop is a material that blends the strength and durability of plastic sheeting over a flexible, UV resistant, interlocking cotton lattice weave.

What you are left with is an incredibly durable material that will hold up for years. Even if it is somehow punctured, the interlocking weave will prevent any further tearing.

Nylon is well known for being lightweight and cheap to manufacture. However, as mentioned before you now know it can tear to shreds when a snag is encountered.

Best All Around - Mythik Outdoors Drift Master Drift Sock Kit

But, why is the Mythik Outdoors Drift Master Drift Sock Kit the best?

The Mythik Outdoors Drift Master Drift Sock is easy to use and flat out catches you fish!

It’s not just any drift sock.  It’s a drift sock engineered by anglers for anglers to provide performance where you need it.

The construction is solid. Holding in your hands the sock just plain out feels durable and strong.

I love that it’s made from the ultra-durable “RipStop” material and I like that it’s evenly paired with the high-density nylon strapping.

Talking with a Mythik Outdoors representative, they proudly claim the Drift Master drift sock is 30% stronger than other competitors who use a cheaper version of the RipStop material.

Looking closely I can see they even triple stitched the high-tension points which is a good feature.

But that’s not all…

The Drift Master comes in a complete kit!

When you open the package you’ll also get:

  • A floating harness line with a bright buoy…
  • A collapsing cord for easy retrieval…
  • A water-resistant storage bag…
  • And a digital Users Guide & Best Practices Manual!

I did a quick calculation and I found out that if I were to purchase all those accessories separately it would be nearly $100!

To top it off Mythik Outdoors has a limited lifetime warranty on their drift sock, which is much better than any of the competition that was tested.

The Verdict…

In summary, Mythik Outdoors easily won the Best Overall award for making a high-quality drift sock.

Best of all they combined everything into a complete kit!

The last thing to note is the Mythik Outdoors Drift Master drift sock kits sell out fast, so make sure you get yours before they’re gone!

Best Runner Up Lindy Drift Control Drift Sock

About Lindy Drift Control Drift Socks...

Lindy Drift Control Drift Socks Review

Using high quality materials and paying attention to detail in both design and production makes The Lindy Drift Control Drift Sock our Runner Up.

Lindy uses high-density nylon which offers good durability and is extremely lightweight.

We were impressed by the insane amount of water the Drift Control catches.

Hang up but not a deal breaker…

Unfortunately, Lindy didn’t include the rest of the necessary accessories such as the floating harness, the collapsing cord, or the storage bag which really makes an effective drift sock system.

Verdict…

Lindy easily secured the Runner Up Award with their  Drift Control Drift Sock for making a bag the is not only strong but also much lighter than what it seems.

This proprietary shape of the Drift Control drift sock allows it to fill with an immense amount of water to slow your boats drift down crazy fast.

Best Budget - MOOCY 32-Inch Drift Sock

About MOOCY 32-Inch Drift Sock Sea Anchors...

We had tested the MOOCY 32-Inch Drift Sock several times before writing this article.

Of the few times using it held up and worked as expected.

While MOOCY drift sock uses a lighter density nylon tear-prevention material it is nowhere near as heavy-duty as the Rip-Stop material that is used on the Mythik Outdoors Drift Master

A convenient floating harness is included when you buy a MOOCY drift sock which is a nice feature, but it lacks the collapsing cord or the storage bag.

Hang-ups, but not deal breakers…

This drift sock itself seems a little unbalanced… what I mean by that is, the nylon straps seem very strong but the material feels cheap.

Overall construction was fairly sturdy, but after close inspection, the seams on the strap attachment points on the drift sock were only single stitching.  This could potentially create separation in these critical areas after prolonged use.

The verdict…

The MOOCY 32-inch drift sock would excel for someone who is on a budget, who is not going to be doing a large amount of drift fishing or doesn’t mind buying extra needed accessories like the collapsing cord or a storage bag.

Best For Extra Large Boats & Pontoons - Cabela's Advanced Anglers Pro Series Drift Sock

About Cabela's Advanced Anglers Pro Series Drift Socks...

Cabela’s Advanced Anglers Pro Series Drift Sock Review

Simply stated, anglers that have a large boat or pontoon need a giant drift sock like this.

Made from upgraded reinforced nylon this product feels incredibly strong.

Of all the features this sock offers, there is one that really stands out…

The Cabela’s Advanced Pro Series Drift Sock has a built-in float in a small section of the bucket rim, and conversely, on the opposite side, it has a series of small weights sewn in.

This is critical in order to help the drift sock open up quickly.

Cabela’s also added some cool additional features like a storage bag and a carbine clip that is rubber-coated.

Hang-ups, but not deal breakers…

This extra-large drift sock is made only from reinforced nylon which is not as strong as Rip-Stop, so you would have to use it in only open water.   There have also been reports of the clip breaking.

The verdict…

The Cabela’s Advanced Pro Series Drift Sock is so much lighter than you expect for such a large drift sock.

Furthermore, Cabela’s strategically placed the floats and weights to open immediately once in the water, giving you near-instantaneous performance.

Have a look at the Cabela’s Advanced Pro Series Drift Sock reviews from Amazon customers… you will not be disappointed.

“I used this for the first time to drift fish for Black Sea bass and flounder. I had a tide that pushed me southerly and the winds pushing perpendicular from west to east. This slowed my drift and kept my bow into the wind. Kept my drift pretty slow on a 22ft walk around. Turned some heads as others watched me slide right in between anchored boats. Make sure you have a good deck hand to quickly maneuver if you have to.”

Honorable Mention - Minn Kota Drift Sock

About Minn Kota Drift Socks...

The Honorable Mention award has to go to Minn Kota for their drift sock.

Being a relatively new player in the drift sock market Minn Kota pushed the boundaries for delivering a quality product.

Next to The Mythik Outdoors Drift Master Drift Sock, this drift sock has very similar durability, both being made from 420 denier Rip-Stop nylon.

You never have to worry about the bag not opening because it has a weighted section sewn in for quick and easy deployment.

Hang-ups, but not deal breakers…

Although this drift sock is incredibly strong and durable it lacks the other accessories you would have to buy, such as the floating harness line, a collapsing cord, or a convenient storage bag.

And nearly for the price of one drift sock you can buy an equally dependable drift sock that comes in a complete kit!

The verdict…

If you’re a die-hard Min Kota fan, or if you just want a guide-quality replacement drift sock this would be the sock for you.

Fishing Reel

Reel – Having the correct reel to match with your rod is just as important.  A good reel should be light and have a buttery smooth drag. There are several great reels on the market, but I recommend the a quality Shimano  baitcasting reel. It’s a great reel packed with great features. So much so that it could easily be priced in the mid $200 range.

>>How To Choose A Great Bass Fishing Reel For The Money [and which to avoid at all costs]

Fishing Line

Fishing Line – Having a good line is just as important as having a good rod. I recommend fishing with a good fluorocarbon line. Furthermore, it’s super sensitive because it has little to no stretch, and underwater it’s invisible to the bass!  If pride or money is on the line I would use Sunline Sniper FC.

Fishing Lures & Baits

Fishing Lures – It’s pretty hard and darn near impossible trying to catch a fish without using some sort of lure or bait.  More importantly these baits you should never forget at home or it could lead to a horrible day on the water

Life Vest

According to Statista, “In the United States, 658 people died as a result of boating accidents and 2,641 people were injured in 2021.”

And it gets even worse… The National Safe Boating Council reported, “Where cause of death was known, 81% of fatal boating accident victims drowned.”

And if that’s not enough the incidence of deaths has climbed dramatically in recent years.

So if you’re on the water you NEED to wear your life vest. Protect you, your friends, and your families lives by wearing a life vest every time you’re on the water.

I recommend the ONYX PFD. It’s comfortable for all day use and there is lots of room for the air to move around so you won’t get sweaty.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses – Do you find yourself fishing in variable light and water conditions? Fishing in open water? Fishing in the bright hot sun? Then, only to leave the lake with eye strain and a splitting headache?

If so, I strongly recommend investing in a pair of Costa Sun Glasses. Thousands of anglers, charter guides, and tournament professionals put their trust into Costa, and so should you. Here’s why…

Costa’s co-injected bio-based nylon frame material is robust and durable, as well as extremely comfortable to wear for all-day use. TR-90 nylon is an excellent material for sports and performance frames since it is heat and cold-resistant.
Costa builds their glasses with class-leading technology. Their 580G glass lens sets them apart from the competition. These lenses are ideal for long days on the lake or sea since you won’t have to worry about scratches on the lens when you wipe the saltwater off. Needless to say they’re Costa’s most durable lenses.

Anyone who spends time outside, especially on the lake, needs polarized lenses. However, not all polarized sunglasses are the same. Costa is 99.9% polarized, giving it the most effective possible in blocking reflecting glare, and minimizing eye strain and headaches.

Drift Sock

Simply speaking, a drift sock (also known as a drift anchor) is like a parachute for the water. It gives you the ability to silently troll without spooking the fish!

Anyone who fishes out of a boat, canoe, kayak, stand up paddle board, or any other type of floating vessel  should have a drift sock ready to use.

In addition to helping you catch more fish, recreational boaters also like to have 1-2 drift socks handy, just in case their motor goes out on them the drift sock will help slow their drift. This could be instrumental to allow rescuers to find that boat quickly and easily.

I strongly recommend the Drift Master Drift Sock by Mythik Outdoors.

The construction is solid. Holding this in your hands gives you the peace of mind this feels durable and dependable.

I love that it’s made from the gorilla-strong “RipStop” high density material, and I like that it’s even paired with the high-density nylon strapping.

It’s 30% stronger than other competitors who use a cheaper version of the RipStop material, so you never have to worry about his ripping.

Looking closely I can see they even triple stitched the high-tension points which is a good feature.

But best part… the Drift Master comes in a complete kit!

So get yours today and don’t leave yourself adrift.

The last thing to note is the Mythik Outdoors Drift Master drift sock kits sell out fast, so make sure you get yours before they’re gone!

Landing Net

Landing Net – As you are reeling in that monster fish, you don’t want to injure yourself or knock the fish off the hook by trying to grab it.

The PLUSINNO floating landing net is designed with foam padding on the hoop and provides buoyancy for fishermen. Now, If the net is dropped or blown overboard, the floating design makes it simple to retrieve – so you won’t have to be concerned about losing it! The rubberized net cannot be snagged. It keeps the fish safe for catch-and-release, and the non-absorbent covering avoids waterlogging and odor absorption in the net.  It’s collapsing design allows for easy storage.

That’s why I recommend a dependable telescopic landing net.

Fishing Weight Scale & Culler

Fishing Weight Scale – Whether you’re going to keep your catch or just take a photo of it and brag to your friends it’s important to have an accurate scale. The Rapala Tournament Model Touch Screen Scale makes weighing and logging your catch easier and more convenient. The large digital scale has a lot of functions and is easy to use. simply keep track of your current catch and its place in your overall weight. To see the weight, just suspend the catch from the heavy-duty composite clamp or the accompanying stainless steel hook.  Adding the important details to your catch couldn’t be easier – simply input your catch’s weight and tap on one of the eight storage places. The culling process makes it simple to identify fish that should be released for the greatest overall weight.

I recommend a Rapala Tournament Scale that has a large LED display like this one fishing scale here.

FAQ

How do I use my drift sock?

Often, these drift socks are very similar to setup and use.  To get started, you only have to know what type of drift sock you own for your kayak and how many drift socks you’ll be using. Once you know this, the rest is simple.

Below you can click on the link where you’ll learn the best ways to use your drift sock and why.  It really flattens the learning curve helps you learn how to use a drift sock efficiently.

Read more: Drift Sock Basics – What It Is & How To Use It [2020 Quick Start Guide]

Can I use a drift sock in a river or current?

Absolutely! There are specific strategies to give you the best results and so much more.

If you ever fish in a river or in a current you need to learn these Best Practice Strategies

Read more: How to use your drift sock in a river or current.

What happens if my drift sock gets stuck or snagged?

Unfortunately, it’s inevitable your drift sock will get snagged on submerged structure. If that happens you can backtrack just slightly behind where the sock is snagged. Simply pull the collapsing cord first. Many times your drift comes right off the snag.

What happens if my drift sock gets ripped?

Rips tend to occur with the cheaper drift socks and drift bags since that is not made with the ultra-durable Rip-Stop material.

If you do rip it you can try to sew it up yourself. Getting your sock snagged and torn is not considered a product defect and it is unlikely the manufacturer will replace it. But you could always try.

Do drift socks sink?

Without any float devices such as buoys, yes your drift sock will sink.

What happens if the wind or current dies down?

If the wind our current dies down it’s important to pack up your drift sock.  It’s really nice to be able to store it in a water-resistant bag. We recommend using this one here, and best of all you can buy it from Amazon.

Can I use a drift sock for saltwater fishing?

Absolutely!  Using a drift sock in any tidal or current setting will work great.

How do I store my drift sock when I’m not using it?

Storing your drift sock, harness line, and collapsing strap is easy if it comes with a storage bag. Otherwise, all the lines and straps can get tangled, turning a fun day of fishing into a frustrating day.  I full-heartedly recommend the Drift Master brand drift sock kit because it already comes with a heavy-duty water-resistant storage bag making store-and-stow quick and easy.  Click here to check availability on Amazon.

I want to stop my kayak while I’m diving. Will a drift sock help with that?

No, a drift sock will only slow you down. Buying an anchor will help you completely stop your drift. If you need an anchor for your kayak, we recommend this one here
